Renqiu Yu This 1919 nation-wide student movement turned into a watershed in Chinese history. The response of Peking University's faculty and students to the betrayal of China by the framers of the Versailles Treaty helped redefine China's culture as a part of the modern world. It produced a sharp turn towards scientific and democratic values, nationalism, women’s rights and literacy. It also sparked the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1921. Renqiu Yu, a professor at the State University of New York at Purchase, teaches modern Chinese history. Tickets are $25; $20 for China Institute members. Members please call 212.415.5500 to register.
