The Players Who Integrated Baseball Steve Jacobson, Arlene Howard and Ed Charles Pulitzer-nominated sports writer Steve Jacobson leads a discussion of the struggles and triumphs of the black baseball players who followed Jackie Robinson, including Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron and Lou Brock. Jacobson is joined by Arlene Howard, the wife of Elston Howard, the first black member of the Yankees, and Ed Charles, who spent eight seasons with the Atlanta Braves in the still-segregated South and later played for the New York Mets. Jacobson was a columnist for Newsday from 1960-2005 and is the author of Carrying Jackie’s Torch.
