A History of the Jewish Mother Joyce Antler A professor of American-Jewish history and culture at Brandeis University offers a colorful picture of one of the best-known figures in popular culture—the Jewish mother. The early 20th-century sentimental figure became brassy-voiced, smothering and shrewish decades later.
