Peter Krass The Army first recruited artists during World War I to document "the shock and loss and bitterness and blood" of the conflict. The eight civilians, traveling through battlefields, recorded what they saw in diaries, letters and sketches. Peter Krass uses these materials and the combat art itself in Portrait of War: The U.S. Army’s First Combat Artists and the Doughboys’ Experience in WWI. Krass is author and editor of 10 other books, including the acclaimed biography Carnegie.
