Tue 17 Apr, 7 pm. Elizabeth Posner and Amanda Lipsitt This presentation will focus on the life of secretJews (or crypto-Jews) in New Spain (Texas and Mexico). Research, including interviews and videos, will be presented on the history and the current culture of Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition of 1492. There will also be a screening of the film Ocho Candelas: The Story of Mexico's Unwanted Jews, which tells the story of a group of Jews by choice in Veracruz, Mexico. How are intimate relationships-gay and straight-represented in Jewish film? What might these representations have to offer to discussions of Jewish continuity, Jewish pluralism, and Jewish sexual ethics? This program will be a mixture of lecture, discussion, and film clips. Helene Meyers is a Professor of English and former chair of Feminist Studies at Southwestern University. She's currently writing a book on Jewish identity in contemporary literature and film. Gary Kenzer, National USA Executive Director, Honest Reporting According to Mark Twain, "If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed." Honest Reporting is an organization formed by a small group of British university students in 2001 in response to the anti- Israel bias demonstrated by the European media in their coverage of the Intifada. Gary Kenzer will teach participants to read between the lines and understand what the media says or does not say and its impact on the public policy of Israel in this country.
