Jewish Antiquities in the Mediterranean 2007

Sun 16 Dec to Wed 26 Dec. This wonderful expedition starts in the ‘eternal’ city of Rome, then a short flight to the North African city of Tunis, adjacent to ancient Carthage, founded by the Phoenicians, where Jews have lived for two-and-a-half millennia. You’ll see highlights of this exotic capital, like Casablanca, a blend of “Arabian nights” mystique with French sophistication. You’ll meet members of Tunisia’s remaining Jewish community, and visit their synagogues and institutions. You’ll also visit the site of ancient Carthage, the artists’ haven of Sidi-bou-Said, and medieval Sousse. Next – to the exotic island of Djerba, home of Jews for at least twenty-five centuries, with its two “Jewish” towns, and one of the world’s most impressive and ornate synagogues. Jewish South America 2007

Mon 17 Dec to Sun 30 Dec. Just to our south, a whole continent awaits discovery. It’s full of grand cities, extraordinary scenery and a pulse of life that will have your toes tapping and hips gyrating from the moment you arrive. It’s also home to hundreds of thousands of Jews, most of whose ancestors arrived from Eastern Europe at the same time yours reached America. We begin in Argentina and its gorgeous capital Buenos Aires, often called “Paris of South America”…You’ll meet Jewish Argentineans and you’ll journey out into the Pampas where Jewish pioneers created a “Promised Land” in the late 19th century. Next – amazing Iguassu Falls – then journey to northern Brazil, where Jews have lived for almost as long as Europeans have lived in the Western Hemisphere. 233 Park Avenue South, New York, 10003. India 2007

Wed 19 Dec to Mon 31 Dec. India’s history of Jewish settlement dates back to the 1st century with the arrival of those fleeing persecution after the destruction of the Second Temple. Today’s 5,000 Jews are as diverse and polyglot a population as that of India itself. A visit to India is a revealing and intriguing immersion into the more exotic aspects of Jewish life and culture and the more mysterious recesses of the human soul. It is a truly illuminating journey- and we add Nepal, as an option, to complete the adventure. Mike Enav, Tour Director, 212-879-4588, info@ajcongresstravel.com. 5895.
