The Secret Jews: A Life of Hiding in the New Spanish Empire

Elizabeth Posner and Amanda Lipsitt This presentation will focus on the life of secretJews (or crypto-Jews) in New Spain (Texas and Mexico). Research, including interviews and videos, will be presented on the history and the current culture of Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition of 1492. There will also be a screening of the film Ocho Candelas: The Story of Mexico's Unwanted Jews, which tells the story of a group of Jews by choice in Veracruz, Mexico. Co-sponsored by the Religious Studies Program at the University of Texas.
