Workshop members will work together to create exciting dramas with interesting characters, dramatic tension, and believable dialogue. We will discuss plays, musicals, and films as models for writing, choosing works by dramatists such as Harold Pinter, Edward Albee, Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd), Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine), Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver), Tina Howe, Tony Kushner (Angels in America) Alan Ball (American Beauty), Wendy Wasserstein, and David Mamet. You will create characters an audience will care about and settings that reflect the conflict in a scene. You will also be able to make use of humor in an otherwise serious scene, draw on the "unresolved conflict" between your characters, and incorporate the power of ritual in your scripts.
