He was most famous for his beautiful melodic theater and pop tunes like, “Speak Low,” “September Song” and “My Ship,” but he was also a formidably trained classical composer. He was a friend and contemporary of Arnold Schoenberg and Paul Hindemith. He was an avant garde, atonal writer. Weill originated the sound of German Cabaret. For a time he composed beautifully tonal art songs in French. He wrote for film, theater and he was a die-hard jazz fan married to Lotte Lenya.
