Wednesday, November 24 through Sunday, November 28, 2010 Join us over Thanksgiving Weekend for an inspiring Jewish Outdoor Adventures' holiday weekend in beautiful Sedona , Arizona . Voted the " #1 Most Beautiful Place in America " by USA Today, Sedona is situated at the mouth of beautiful Oak Creek Canyon in a unique, brilliant red rock geological area that has mesmerized tourists for decades. Highlights of the weekend include breathtaking hiking, touring the city of Sedona 's art galleries, and visiting the famous vortexes (giant magnets of energy) that attract people worldwide for meditative and spiritual purposes. Time permitting, we'll visit the ancient ruins of the Palatki and Honanki Heritage Sites built into the walls of Red Canyon .
We will be camping in the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon area, a
stone's throw from Sedona, which is part of the
1.8 million-acre Coconino National Forest . To join this adventure, all you need is
a sleeping bag, pad and tent (or you can share
one) and the desire to have a great time. If you have never been to Sedona before,
it's a gorgeous site to behold, especially in the
fall.
Key Details of this Adventure
Campground Details
We will camp in the Chavez Crossing group campground in the
Coconino National Forest , located at about
4,300 feet, on the outskirts of Sedona. There will be picnic tables, toilets and
fire rings. Showers are available at a nearby spa
in Sedona, for an additional fee, or in camp with our propane powered portable hot
water shower system.
Lodging Option
For anyone who loves the outdoors but is uncomfortable
sleeping in a tent, there are various motel options
within a few miles of the campground. Some of the more reasonably-priced nearby
motels include Comfort Inn, Kings Ransom and La
Quinta. If you choose this option, you will need to make your own reservations.
Cost
$175 early bird (payment received by Friday, November 5),
including campsite fees, camping gear, supplies,
and all meals (kosher and delicious, including salmon, chicken and pasta, with a
vegetarian option for those who request it in
advance); $200 thereafter (payment received from Saturday, Nov. 6 and on). Cost of
transportation via carpool is not included, nor
is any possible day-use national forest fee for certain hikes and archeological
sites. Minimum age is 25 years old. Sorry, but no
pets. JOA reserves the right to deny anyone's request to join this trip.
Gear Details
Stoves and lanterns will be provided, as well as all cooking
equipment and sumptuous food for all meals. The
key camping items you need to bring are a tent, sleeping bag and a sleeping pad
which can be rented from REI or A16 or typically
borrowed from friends.
Transportation
Via carpool. The list of participants will be shared
periodically as it is updated so everyone can
coordinate carpooling. Cost will be shared among carpoolers. Sedona is about 425
miles from Los Angeles (just slightly further than
Los Angeles to San Francisco ), or approximately 8 to 9 hours drive. If you prefer
flying, the closest major airport is Phoenix ,
about 120 miles away.
Weather
In November, it is typically mild during the day (in the
60's), and somewhat chilly at night (40's to upper
30's). We will be making roaring fires each night.
RSVP Info
Please email JOA promptly if you wish to RSVP. Spots will
only be secured once a payment is received. Your
reservation is confirmed once payment is received and you have been emailed with a
formal confirmation. If you RSVP and then delay
your payment and it is received after all the spots are filled, you will be
waitlisted for any spot that may open up.
Early-bird amount is $175 by Friday, 11/5/10, $200 thereafter.
Note: Space is limited and this is a popular trip. Reserve
your spot early!
Cancellation Policy
50% refund for cancellation by Monday, 11/15/10. No refunds
thereafter.
Note that we will proceed with the camping trip even in the
event of inclement weather. However, in the
rare chance that the campground closes due to weather conditions, we will obviously
cancel the trip and refund all participants.
Logistics
Will be sent about 10 days prior to the trip date, to those
who RSVP. Campers will be assigned to help out
for dinner preparation and cleanup during the weekend.
