Researching Colorado Jewish Ancestry: A Panel Discussion

Dr. Jeanne Abrams is a Professor at Penrose Library and the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Denver where she is responsible for the Beck Archives collection of the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society. Jeanne will provide an overview of materials in the collection with significant genealogical value including the records of the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society, personal papers, photos and oral testimonies.

Ellen Kowitt is JGSCO President and has written a chapter on resources in Colorado for researching Jewish family history for a reference book to be published by Avotaynu Publishing. She will discuss resources she uncovered while researching the chapter and demonstrate access to indexes created by JGSCO volunteers including the JCRS Index and the mohel records of Dr. John Elsner (1867-1905) and Rabbi Leopold Freudenthal (1874-1909). Terry Lasky is JGSCO Vice President of Programming. Terry indexed over 22,000 Jewish burials in Colorado which have been photographed, translated into English and posted online to the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Index. He will demonstrate searching this database and explain access to another index for Intermountain Jewish News obituaries. Terry will also provide a brief overview of where Colorado vital records, naturalization papers and historical newspapers can be accessed in the Denver area. Jen Lowe is JGSCO Secretary. In 1973, her father purchased the Texaco station in Cotopaxi, Colorado which led to her current research project on the Cotopaxi Jewish Immigrant Colony. Jen will explain and share information about the family tree she has put together and the records she is using to document the 850+ descendants of 70 Cotopaxi settlers.
