Inspired by the true story of Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann, Berlin ‘36 replays a remarkable piece of forgotten Olympic history. Bergmann (award-winning actress Karoline Herfurth) was considered a top contender for the gold medal at the 1936 Summer Games in Nazi-controlled Berlin. With the Americans threatening an Olympic boycott if Jewish athletes were barred from competing, Bergmann is invited to training camp. Forced to spend the weekend in Tel Aviv waiting its repair, Terek must live amongst the people he was planning to kill. To his surprise he connects with several Israelis on the outskirts of society, including the beautiful Keren, who has cut off contact with her Orthodox family and upbringing. Yankele, a mysterious Holocaust survivor, has an office in back of a movie theater that shows only love stories and is run by a family of seven Romanian dwarves. Yankele introduces Arik to a new world, built on the ruins of an old one. As Arik begins to learn the mysteries of the human heart through his work with Yankele, he falls in love with Tamara, his friend Beni's cousin. Tamara has just returned from America and is full of talk of women's rights, free love and rock and roll.
