Tue 10 May, 7 pm. Reflections on Sweden During the Second World War: Interdisciplinary Perspectives Sweden's neutrality during World War II remains controversial more than 60 years after the war. University of Washington Department of Scandinavian Studies faculty will explore Sweden's role in the conflict. Professor Christine Ingebritsen is a political scientist who researches the position of smaller states in international relations. Professor Terje Leiren is an historian whose interests range from questions of national identity and ethnicity to forms of cultural expression. With aspirations of creating an inspiriting involvement with the subjects before us; we hope to provide historical and political context, insight in to the evolution of literary style and expressions, and above all the characteristic ways poets and writers working principally in Israel have addressed the human condition as reflected in their unique circumstances. It is a course that in a short period will be less led than guided, hopefully eliciting everyone's engagement, involvement and excitement for the varied topics and vivid personalities we will certainly encounter. Tue 24 May, 7 pm. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, 7pm: Magda Altman Schaloum was born in Hungary in 1922. She was deported to Auschwitz after the occupation of Hungary by the Germans in 1944. Her sister avoided deportation thanks to one of the protective passports from Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. Magda was later transferred to forced-labor camps in Poland and Germany. She and fellow prisoners were rescued in late 1945 by Allied troops. Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 7pm: Nordic American Voices Oral History Project: Resistance to German occupation during WWII took many forms, from daring acts of personal defiance to simple expressions of non-cooperation. The Nordic American Voices Oral History Project documents the lives of the Nordic immigrant community in the Pacific Northwest. Narrators who have contributed interviews to the project will describe their experiences of occupation.
