The Diaspora: Then and Now

Tue 30 Nov, 6-7:30 pm. 7605 Old York Rd, Melrose Park, 19027. Miri Hacohen, (215)635-7300 148, mhacohen@gratz.edu. Gratz College - [events]

The Jewish department at Penn would love to invite you to an exciting upcoming event at Penn on November 30, 2010. Free dinner will be provided.

Professor Michael Steinlauf of Gratz College will be talking about the Diaspora: Now and Then. A hundred years ago, the legendary writer Y. L. Peretz stood at the center of a new Jewish culture rooted in the Eastern European Diaspora. Peretz believed that the Diaspora could be a powerful source of Jewish creativity and identity expressed in Yiddish as well as Hebrew. Today, worlds away from Peretz and his times, can the Diaspora, alongside the State of Israel, still be seen as a source of strength?
