Faces of Israel: A Discussion about Marriage, State, and Religion in the Jewish When: Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 7:00pm until 8:30pm Where: Hillel UW 4745 17th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98105 Contact: Josh, joshf Just decades ago, David Ben Gurion publicly declared ‘the establishment of a Jewish state… to be known as the State of Israel.’ But what does it mean to be a Jewish state? Do these two characterizations, ‘democratic state’ and ‘Jewish state’, work well together? What happens when they don’t?
Join Jconnect, Hillel UW, the Jewish Federation, and Temple B'nai Torah for “Faces of Israel,” an interactive program that explores the delicate balance between state and religion in Israel through the medium of film. Amy Beth Oppenheimer, director and producer of “Faces of Israel,” is coming to Seattle to lead what is sure to be a riveting discussion about the Jewish state. You won’t want to miss it!
This event will help us understand and grapple with interesting questions such as: How, if at all, should Jewish tradition influence Israeli law? Should there be a Chief Rabbinate, and should it represent the views of all denominations of Judaism? Should civil unions and same sex unions be legalized in Israel?
